The Pacific Crest Trail · 2018

A day, as it was filmed.

These are actual transcripts from trail.

It starts at 4:39 in the morning, in the dark, and it ends at 8:57 that night. Seventeen of the miles in between are uphill. Six people are walking it, and one of them is carrying the camera.

4:39 A.M.

VINCEOkay. I'll take you through a typical day of thruhiking. But this is atypical. It's still pitch black. I'm the first one awake. It's like 4:30 or so. I got June over here on my left. And Henry over there on my right. And it's my job to get the bear bags this morning. I traded Aiden because we're at 1500 feet and tomorrow we'll be at about 5000, so she'll be a lot colder.

What a sucker.

4:51 A.M.

VINCEHow do you do cereal out here without milk?

HENRYChocolate.

VINCEWhat kind of chocolate?

HENRYCocoa powder.

VINCEAnd what kind of cereal you got?

HENRYThis stuff.

VINCEWhat is it?

HENRYI don't know.

5:23 A.M.

VINCEEverybody has a routine when we're cowboy camping. We've got three more minutes and then we'll all pop out together so nobody has to suffer too long in the cold. June always has a hard time getting up in the morning. You about ready to get up, kid?

JUNENo.

VINCEAre we gonna fight?

JUNENo.

VINCEJune, you can do it.

JUNENo.

6:02 A.M.

VINCEOkay. Here we are. Setting out. I got a June Bug. She's ready. Aiden, Georgie, Henry, and Monica. It's six o'clock. It's an hour and a half after I was awake. But we are ready to walk. Today's a total of 17 miles uphill before we even go downhill, so… should be an interesting one. By interesting I mean… not very fun. Are you looking forward to the uphill, Henry?

HENRYNot really.

VINCEAiden?

AIDENLet's just go.

6:20 A.M.

VINCEJune, what's going on?

AIDENGeorgie—

VINCEWe're doing a day in the life, June. This is what it's really like. Why are you and Georgie fighting?

JUNEBecause… I said… I said… I didn't… that you flop the sleeping pad in front of you, and Georgie said… "Well, it's not like you wouldn't."

VINCESo she hurt your feelings?

AIDENGeorgie, you have to apologize to June.

6:28 A.M.

VINCERead that note. What does it say?

AIDENAtención serpiente cascabel venenosa en la zona.

VINCEWait. What?

AIDENAnd it says Warning! Rattlesnake in the area! It was under a rock. And there's a note back there. So somebody had to see the snake and run back past it. That's really nice.

HENRYI don't see any snakes, so what's the point anyway?

6:40 A.M.

VINCEOh crap! Henry, run! Go go go!… Oh, man, did they get you? I got like three stings.

HENRYI got one like right up the shorts.

VINCEDid it get you on the—

HENRYNo… Hey Dad. Where's your phone?

VINCEOh man. It's over there on the ground where they're all swarming. It's probably still recording too. You want to go get it?

HENRYNo way.

VINCEI guess I better.

HENRYIf you have anything to write with you could write a note while you are there.

VINCEDo you know the Spanish word for wasp? I don't have a pencil. Do you? Georgie will. I'll get her to write it when she gets here.

HENRYYeah.

VINCEOuch. That hurt.

6:41 A.M.

VINCEStung me in the leg. Did any of you get stung?

AIDENNone of us got a single sting. It was just you and Henry.

VINCEA day on trail, huh… Show me that Georgie… Why did you draw the picture of the wasp?

GEORGIEI don't know the word for it in Spanish, so I just drew an arrow.

7:12 A.M.

VINCEAn argument has ensued between Georgie and Henry that will likely continue all day about the Little Mermaid song Under the Sea and whether it should be pronounced crustacean or crustacean.

HENRYThat's the way the crab sings it.

GEORGIEThey're wrong. Crustacean is a bad character. I don't care. I'm right.

VINCEAnd many conversations, we'll call them conversations, begin this way that last all day long.

HENRYYep.

7:17 A.M.

JUNEHere.

VINCEAh, June found a feather. June likes to collect feathers for Georgie. When they're talking. Which they are now.

GEORGIEWe're talking and not fighting.

7:37 A.M.

MONICAJune just told me I had to get out.

VINCEI've got to stay back to help move her along.

MONICAShe told me to get out.

VINCENo she didn't.

MONICAShe said, "You can go."

VINCEMom and June are in a fight. Is that unusual?

HENRYNot really.

8:01 A.M.

JUNEI said, and it wasn't me. And he said, oh.

HENRYWho did that?

JUNEI just said, who did that? And first he said no… and then he said, I think it's June. And I just said, no.

HENRYI didn't say I think it's June. I said, um, that smells like a June toot. Oops. Caught on tape.

8:24 A.M.

VINCEIt's a funny day to have picked as the typical day.

AIDENI'm going potty.

VINCEThank you, Aiden.

9:15 A.M.Grider Creek

VINCEGeorgie, step on the rock. It will help, yeah. No, yeah, but that one right there. Step on that rock.

A CHILDBut that one's wobbly.

VINCEAh, get it! Go! Go, don't stand and look! Georgie got her feet wet, Georgie got her feet wet.

GEORGIEAnd you're just filming.

10:46 A.M.

VINCEHey June. Feel like you can do it? This is a hard hill. You can do it. And you will. And when you do it, you'll be proud of yourself.

VINCEEat that. The bar will make you feel better.

10:55 A.M.Aiden has the camera

AIDENGet out. Such a bad… like video to have to watch.

11:19 A.M.

GEORGIEThat's a big deer.

AIDENYou know what I just realized? There is a mountain lion around here somewhere because that's what mountain lions eat.

VINCEOh, that's, that's great Aiden.

AIDENI'm trying to reassure Mom.

11:45 A.M.

VINCEWe got a little inspirational music to take us to the top. Right Monica?

Scorned and covered with scars. Still strove…

HENRYStrove?

VINCEWith his last ounce of courage. Sing it, sing it. To reach… the unreachable—

12:53 P.M.

VINCEBug, you gonna make it?

JUNEYeah.

VINCELet me see ya. I need to see your face, so I know it's true. Yeah? You gonna make it?

JUNEYeah.

VINCEYou did a great job. You pushed up a long hill.

12:59 P.M.Buckhorn Spring

VINCEThis is where we're gonna lunch. Perfect spot. Perfect shade tree. How's everybody doing?

HENRYThat was hard.

VINCEThat was hard.

MONICAThat was hard. I'm so tired.

2:41 P.M.

VINCEJune's trying to help it flow a little faster right here.

JUNEIt's gonna be a really long day if I have to do this.

VINCESeems like it's working.

JUNEDid you see all those tadpoles? Daddo, I just thought of something. How do they get all the way up here? It's not like they can live through the winter. And if I was a tadpole I'd much rather live in Florida.

VINCEYou miss Florida at all?

JUNEI miss Frankie.

VINCEIsn't that the one that refuses the jumps?

JUNEMiss Shannon says that's the rider's fault.

VINCEIt's your fault when Frankie stops?

JUNESometimes, when I get nervous, I look at the jump and that communicates to him that it's a big, scary monster.

VINCEThe jump is a monster?

JUNEYep.

VINCEI bet you'll be better at it when we get home.

JUNEI'll have to get back in horseback riding shape. It's a lot different muscles, 'cause you have to squeeze with your knees all the time. Here, hand me that bottle. I'll fill it up.

2:56 P.M.

VINCEIt's SoGood. We're doing a day in the life, cause our friends asked. What's a day like?

SOGOODToday… I mean, we just climbed a hill. There's a little bit more of the hill. So I'm taking a break. Elevating my feet.

VINCEHave you hit cry thirty yet? Cause we anticipate… We've hit two cry thirties.

SOGOODNot… I'm holding strong. I got this crystallized lemon that's added to my water. I think it's gonna take care of some woes.

VINCEDo you have anything to go with that lemon?

SOGOODI have some maple cookies.

3:26 P.M.

VINCEOkay southbounder, you've earned it. You've walked to the crest. You've walked out the top of the trees. And now your reward is in front of you, these beautiful views of… of… of… smoke. There is your reward. Not yet. Not yet Shasta. Not yet smoke. But we'll keep trying.

3:44 P.M.

VINCEI just love getting to walk with my kids in their footsteps, walk behind them all day long. Live their struggles with them, be encouraged by them. The things that June is learning and suffering through and growing from are really fun to watch. I'm really proud of this kid. Did you know I'm proud of you, June?

JUNEYeah.

VINCEYou did?

JUNEYeah.

VINCEI'm glad you did.

3:55 P.M.

VINCEAll right, so Georgie, what happened just now?

GEORGIEUm, I found some mountain lion footprints. And they either on top of the footprints of…

VINCEPoker Face?

GEORGIEYeah, or the other lady.

VINCEOh, okay. Wow. So they were getting stalked. How far ahead?

GEORGIEFive minutes.

VINCEWell… at least you didn't get eaten.

4:07 P.M.

VINCEWe are absolutely confident that Monica is on high alert for mountain lions. As soon as we catch up to her, if we ever catch up to her, we're gonna ask her how much she's been thinking about mountain lions today. I bet it's an astoundingly high number. It'd be funny if we reviewed this video and you could see one—

GEORGIEThat's not funny.

VINCE—sitting there looking at us.

4:41 P.M.

GEORGIEIt's crazy. We just came from a whole different— We came from vegetation and—

VINCEYeah, what a difference in one day. Like, all you gotta do is climb 5,500 feet and everything changes.

GEORGIEWe climbed 5,500 feet?

VINCEYes.

4:56 P.M.

VINCEWe are coming up to June's dream right here. There's a family that is out backpacking on horses. This is just plain cool. This is so exciting. I can't believe it.

MONICAOh, and water. I guess this is the water.

VINCEThat we're looking for. Look at this, June. Horses.

5:13 P.M.

VINCEGuys, let's take our usie for today. Get in the frame. Oops, I've got it on video.

5:23 P.M.

VINCESo we just met the Bishops. The Bishops, a family of ten, out on a pack trip with their horses. They gave us pickles and some kind of awesome cucumber that looked like an apple.

GEORGIELemon cucumber.

VINCELemon cucumber. It was so good. Really good. We have a lot more miles to walk tonight, but that's okay. We feel happy and full and joyous.

VINCEAt any rate, Mr. Bishop knew Tim Lloyd really well. Georgie!

GEORGIEThat was cool what he said.

VINCEThat he liked Tim.

GEORGIENo, that there's nothing like a human for walking.

JUNEOh yeah, and I liked how he said that a horse couldn't even go faster without him going lame.

5:24 P.M.

VINCEMonica is not excited about the paw prints that we're seeing. Oh, Monica, we meant to ask you. What percentage of the time today have you been thinking about mountain lions?

MONICAPercentage?

GEORGIE99.9.

VINCESince we got to the top.

MONICASince we got to the top, maybe forty.

VINCEWow. That's not that bad. I was thinking it was going to be a lot more than forty, I'll be honest with you.

GEORGIEDad?

VINCEYeah, Georgie.

GEORGIEI've been thinking 99.9.

5:29 P.M.

VINCEI can see why it's called the Marble Mountains. It's like big slabs of marble. Up there. Look at that, Georgie. Look at that ridge line.

GEORGIEWhoa.

VINCEAnd our typical, typical day, we're enjoying these beautiful mountain meadows.

GEORGIEThis is not a typical day.

VINCEWith these gorgeous peaks in there behind, it's the setting sun.

GEORGIEOkay, this is the most exotic day we've had yet.

VINCENo, it's not.

GEORGIEYes, it is.

VINCEIt is not. We've had good… we have moments like this almost every day.

GEORGIEMoments.

5:43 P.M.

VINCEMonica. You're kind of glistening.

MONICAYou're catching my dirty armpits. Look at those. Those are pretty attractive.

VINCEI know, aren't they awesome? How you feeling?

MONICASweaty.

VINCENo you're glistening.

MONICAI'm sweating.

6:01 P.M.

VINCEJust ridiculous.

HENRYWhat is?

VINCEJust ridiculous.

HENRYWhat is?

VINCEHow pretty this is.

HENRYWhat?

VINCEThat up there. Look at it. Nothing? Not interested? Okay.

6:48 P.M.

VINCEHey. Hey. Lift up your eyes. You're doing a great job.

JUNEI'm tired.

VINCEHey, can you make it?

JUNEMaybe. I don't know.

VINCEHey, I know you can. Look at me. You've done it before, you can do it again.

VINCEGeorgie, how was your day? So far.

GEORGIETiring.

VINCEHow are you feeling?

HENRYWanting to be done.

VINCEHey Snickers. Enjoying being plugged in and part of this family?

AIDENAbsolutely.

VINCEWhat are you listening to?

AIDENA Gentleman in Moscow.

VINCESmiley pants. Give me some love. Good job.

JUNEI'm not smiling.

VINCEOh.

VINCEHenry, you're having a good cry?

HENRYNo.

VINCEWhy?

HENRYBecause we're not eating.

7:09 P.M.

VINCEIt's really hard for me not to pick up the camera.

7:30 P.M.

VINCEWe are… we are at the weary hour, Henry. Are you weary?

HENRYNo.

VINCEYou weary of soul? Weary of heart? Just mad? You just mad?

HENRYHuh? It's weary of heart.

VINCEWeary of heart. Why are you weary of heart?

HENRYI said that is weary of heart.

VINCEOh. Why are you upset?

HENRYBecause I wanted to get there earlier, but we're not walking our fastest.

VINCEWell, it's a hard day. It's a slow day, I think, 'cause there's a lot of climbing. So, we've done well. Don't worry.

7:54 P.M.Marble Valley Cabin Elev 5880

VINCECan you see it on the camera?

MONICAUh-huh.

8:26 P.M.

VINCEThis is my dinner tonight. Looks yum, doesn't it? Peanut butter, mayonnaise, pepperoni.

HENRYThis is gonna be my sandwich. Can you help? Stick these on there.

VINCEWhy don't I give you a tortilla?

HENRYNo. I already ate a tortilla, but I'm just eating more.

VINCEAiden and Georgie are over there eating. June is under her blanket, eating?

JUNENot yet.

VINCEMonica?

MONICAI'm in the tent.

8:37 P.M.

VINCEHow do you feel about today?

MONICAUm, it was hard. It was a lot of uphill. A lot of tired.

VINCEI think it was a good decision to stop early. I was pleased with June's apology to everybody for losing her temper. That was exciting.

MONICAI don't know.

VINCEDo you think it was a typical day?

MONICANo.

VINCEWhy? What was different?

MONICAWell, we had 17 miles uphill, first of all. In the first half of the day. And then we saw some amazing stuff this afternoon that we don't, haven't, haven't seen yet.

VINCEI thought it was a good, like in the sense that it was like, the highs were high and the lows were low. It was hard.

MONICAAnd lunch was really fun. Lunch was fun. I always love lunch. I just love the sitting and having coffee and laughing part.

VINCEIt was a good day. I think it was a good day. I'm looking forward to seeing town tomorrow.

MONICAWhat are you doing this for?

8:57 P.M.

VINCESo the first stars have come out tonight and it's time to go to bed. I'll get up early in the morning and go. It's been a long hard day. But, that was a day on the trail.

GEORGIEHuh?

VINCEA so typical day on the trail. Good night.

It isn’t in the book. The book was built out of days like this one.

Then watch the stretch.

The family posted their 2018 walk as a run of episodes. The one that covers this stretch of trail is Ep 7, We are Glamping Now — Crater Lake down to Etna — so this day is somewhere inside it, along with the weeks on either side. The whole 2018 playlist runs to a hundred videos →

Vince writes about the walking, and the years after it, at Strawbridge Treks — free, and you can leave whenever you like.

Two parents, four kids, Canada to Mexico on foot: 142 days, 2,650 miles, filmed as they went.
